Modern w/ Michael Velez

3:30 – 5:00pm
Dance Mission Theater
3316 24th Street, San Francisco
$10 All Levels Welcome

Fusing elements of release, Taylor, Horton and contemporary influences, Velez’s
students enjoy movement that is dynamic  and intentional while challenging the
solidarity of technique. The energy required should encourage dancers to explore
movement through an organic sequence of the body’s weight and momentum.
Technical experiments in alignment, coordination and versatility will prepare the body
to dance through space with spirit yet safely. The warm up moves into lengthy
phrases that will build to a complete combination. Focus is placed on core strength
and the individual’s full-bodied awareness.  Michael provides a generous and
responsive community within the classroom where students can push themselves to
new personal boundaries.

Sunday, February 21st
Fond Kongo Modern w/Byb Chanel Bibene
co-sponsored by Dance Mission Theater
Dance Mission Theater
3316 24th Street, San Francisco
1:30 – 3:00pm
$10 All Levels Welcome

In this work of perpetual experimentation, I consider my workshops as taking place
on a tray where the dancer-actor is an interpreter and puts a link between the
intro and extra body space. Set up in forms of sound, bodily gamuts, sequences and
the gesture, I am interested in circumscribing in the space, words or phrases and
patterns, all described on palpable papers or tissue of imagination. The backdrop to
the dance will be based on the merits of Kongo background, that is to say, the
bases of the Kongo dances cultural values from which emerge all the possible
interpretations of life experienced by everyone whatever their origin and that
through singing, clapping hands, theatricality, beating the ground, laughing,
breathing ...
